Rebecca’s Story | Riding and Raising funds for Macmillan
We spoke to Rebecca to who rode the Dragon Ride in 2022 and raised money for Macmillan Cancer Support with a personal backstory fuelling her motivation to ride and raise as much as possible.
“I decided to take part in the Macmillan Dragon Ride 2022 and raise sponsorship for Macmillan Cancer Support as so many people close to me had been affected by cancer over the years.”
“My best friend and my uncle were both diagnosed with cancer within a matter of weeks over 10 years ago, both are thankfully in remission. My grandma was helped by brilliant Macmillan nurses in her final months, and we have had a run of cancer diagnoses in my business…all of which spurred me on to complete the ride.”
“After entering the ride, my dear cousin Mick was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer, and we spent the year making sure he had the best experiences possible, this really drove me on to complete the race and get as much funding as I could, even though the person in our group doing the same distance as me had to drop out late on – so I spent most of the 100km riding solo, nowhere to hide and no one to draft!”
“When it came to sponsorship, I was shameless about who I approached and how I did it – using email, LinkedIn, Facebook – anywhere I could generate some interest – and the best trick seemed to be to be donate to yourself to get things going!”
